Brown Long-eared Bat

Mammal Hero

Brown Long-eared bat (Plecotus auritus) is found throughout to the UK including Ireland but not on Orkney or Shetland. They will catch insects in free flight but also they “glean” insects. This involves flying slowly amongst foliage and picking insects off leaves and bark. However their habit of flying close to the ground, or even landing to tackle prey, makes long-eared bats vulnerable to attack by predators especially domestic cats.
